The Showstoppers of Southeast Missouri will be hosting a spaghetti dinner and a special performance on the evening of Friday, May 19, in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church in Dexter. Proceeds from the dinner will help fund the Showstoppers' upcoming annual trip. Doors will open at 5:30 with dinner served at 6 p.m.
The Showstoppers, a song and dance troupe under the direction of Mary Ruth Boone, was established 20 years ago. The group consists of male and female musical talents who perform from all over southeast Missouri. Over the years, the group has performed in settings to include New Orleans, Disney World in Orlando, Fla., New York City, Chicago and in Europe.
This year, the Showstoppers are taking a Carnival Cruise and will be featured in three separate shows while onboard the ship, performing musical numbers to selections from Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia.
The cruise will take the group -- 28 students and 35 parents -- to Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico. The trip is self-funded.
The students performing in the Showstoppers range in age from middle school to college age.
"This year's group includes students from Dexter, Bloomfield, Essex, Greenville, Advance and others," Boone noted. "We're always looking for new talent," she added. "We have a lot of students in southeast Missouri who excel in music, and we'd love for them to join us."
Dinner tickets for the event sell for $10 each and are available from Boone at 573-820-3516 or any Showstoppers member. Inquiries regarding the Showstoppers should also be addressed to Boone. The dinner includes spaghetti, Ceasar salad, green beans, dessert and a drink.
