The Dexter tennis team is looking to make the third time a charm against Notre Dame.

The Bearcats earned a rematch with the top seed by advancing to the MSHSAA Class 1 District 1 championship match with a 5-0 win over North County on Tuesday.

"I'm anxious to see what they can do," Dexter coach Kurt Lovelady said. "They're hitting the ball well."

Notre Dame, which won two matches against Dexter in the regular season, will host the Bearcats at 4 p.m. Wednesday looking to end Dexter's run of two straight district team titles.

The Bulldogs (10-1) beat Dexter 6-3 and 5-4, however, the last meeting was April 4.

"We're hitting the ball better right now," Lovelady said. "Had several guys string together several wins.

The Bearcats (5-4), who have won four straight, swept doubles play against the Raiders (7-3).

Top-seeded Zach Potts and Eric Hahn improved to 13-2 in doubles play with an 8-1 win over North County's Daniel Jackson and Clayton Risenhoover. Will Brehmer and Nate Gargas gave Dexter an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles while Matthew Chesser and Logan Wyman were 8-0 winners.

Potts beat Jackson in the top-seeded singles match 6-2, 6-0 while Hahn earn a 6-0, 6-0 win over Risenhoover.

The rest of the matches were not completed but Lovelady said that probably won't be the case in the final.

"I think it's going to come down to our singles matches," he said.

Notre Dame took 2 of 3 in doubles play both times while in the second meeting, the teams split two singles matches that went to a tiebreaker while the Bulldogs earned wins of 9-7 and 8-6.

"Ever since that match, (Nate Gargas) has had a determination like nothing else," Lovelady said. "I'm anxious to see his rematch."

Dexter beat Notre Dame 5-1 in the championship match last year as the top seed after sweeping the championship match in 2015. The Bulldogs last won the title in 2014.

The winner advances to the sectional playoff to be hosted by the District 3 champion on May 20.

The individual district tournament will be held Friday at Sikeston.
