Vernon D. Bagwell, 85, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Westwood Hills Healthcare Center in Poplar Bluff.
Vernon, the son of the late Sylvester and Charity Heifner Bagwell, was born March 12, 1932, in Poplar Bluff. He was a devout Christian and a longtime member (over 55 years) of South Poplar Bluff General Baptist Church, where he also served on the Deacon Board. Vernon later attended Agee Church and had retired after a career in Insurance Sales. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, and was awarded a Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Vernon enjoyed spending time with his family, Church work, yard work and old cars.
Survivors include two children, Angie (David) Pigg of Poplar Bluff and Les Bagwell of Farmington; a granddaughter, Brooke Bagwell of Farmington; two great-grandchildren, Trevor Wagner and Bryce Wagner of Poplar Bluff; a sister, Barbara James of Poplar Bluff; a brother, Victor Bagwell of Poplar Bluff; and several nieces and nephews.
A granddaughter, Jessica Moore and two sisters, Imogene Williams and Edna Oliphant also preceded Vernon in death.
Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. Monday with the funeral service following at 2 p.m. at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The Rev. Jim Schremp will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be at the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.
