The Three Rivers Buglers chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation kicked off its third decade in style Saturday night, celebrating its 21st big game banquet with about 425 people in attendance.
“I thought it went really well, and everyone had a good time,” said committee member Lenard Wagganer. “Everything just went smoothly.”
The banquet, Wagganer said, raised $96,000 for RMEF, much of which stays in Missouri and benefits its newly-restored elk herd.
The event at the Black River Coliseum began with a social hour, where various games, raffles and a silent auction were set up for visitors to participate in. In addition, special tables with raffles for ladies and children also were available.
“All of our raffles and the kids’ and ladies’ tables did great,” said Wagganer.
“The 12-gun raffle tickets sure went fast,” he added.
After an Armed Forces Medley by Jim Todd and national anthem sung by reigning Miss Missouri, Katelyn Lewis, a steak and chicken dinner, prepared by Karon Campbell’s Tasteful Creations, kicked off around 6:30 p.m.
“The meal was great,” Wagganer exclaimed, noting everyone was through the line and seated in “10 to 12 minutes.”
Five representatives from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation were on hand, Wagganer said, including a member of the board of directors, a first for the event.
“They were excited about it and thought everything went great,” Wagganer noted.
After the dinner, a live auction was conducted by volunteer auctioneers Felix Baker and Haven Willis for items like framed prints, a bolt-action rifle, home decor and more.
“They always do a great job for us,” said Wagganer.
A four-man African safari with Fig Tree Safaris was won by Brian Sheppard.
About 50 guns were given away over the course of the night, including the RMEF Gun of the Year, a Weatherby Mark V rifle, which went home with Rick Tarpley.
Next year’s banquet, Wagganer said, is scheduled for May 9, and volunteers are always welcome to help plan and work the event. Those wishing to do so can call him at 573-718-5030.
