The Giants were looking for catching depth with a recent rash of injuries in their minor league system. They signed veteran Ryan Hanigan and acquired Murphy from the Braves for cash. Neither player has been assigned to a club, according to The Athletic.

Murphy could land at the Class A Augusta GreenJackets of the South Atlantic League.

"I couldn't be more excited to continue my career with the San Francisco Giants. I'm really looking forward to what the future in the organization holds for me," Murphy wrote. "I can't wait to get there and show everybody what I'm about."

Selected by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round of the 2013 draft out of high school, the 23-year-old is in his sixth professional season. Last season in 53 games between the Rome Braves and Florida Fire Frogs, Murphy drove in 16 runs, hit two home run and had a .206 batting average.
