CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. --Gage Rivers ran for two touchdowns and threw for another while Justin Mitchell scored twice as the Poplar Bluff Junior High football team beat Cape Central 45-6 Thursday.

Poplar Bluff's seventh grade team won 6-0 at Cape Central on Wednesday.

In the eighth grade game, Rivers threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Baller with 5.4 seconds left in the half to put the Junior Mules up 25-0. Rivers caught a lateral from quarterback Kannon Carr before hitting a wide-open Baller downfield.

Carr threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell for Poplar Bluff's first touchdown. Rivers added a 10-yard touchdown run while Mitchell's 20-yard run put the Junior Mules up 18-0.

Rivers added a 40-yard touchdown run before Devin Gatewood scored on an 8-yard run and Dalton Gatewood added a 33-yard score for Poplar Bluff (3-0-1).

Poplar Bluff's seventh grade team got a 5-yard touchdown run by Jeridon Young for the only score. The Junior Mules (2-0) sealed the win with an interception at their own 25-yard line and ran out the clock. Earlier in a scoreless first half, an interception gave the Tigers the ball at the Poplar Bluff 15-yard line but turned the ball over on downs four plays later.

The Junior Mules host Jackson on Thursday at Morrow Stadium. -- DAR
