Malden jumped up a spot after defeating New Madrid Central to open the season last week, 50-12, and is on the bubble of breaking into the state rankings at No. 11. Caruthersville hasn't enjoyed a win over Malden since 2013, a losing streak that spans six games.

The Green Wave won last year's games, including the MSHSAA Class 2 District 1 title game, by a combined score of 55-36. The first game of the season in Week 2 of last year, however, was a nail-biter. Malden narrowly hung on for a 28-20 triple overtime victory and didn't breathe easy until Malden's defense swarmed the quarterback for a sack toseal a win. The Green Wave won the rematch in the district title game rather easily, handing the Tigers a 27-16 loss and ended their season for the third straight year.

Malden senior quarterback Mason Brown and senior running back Tray Stevenson are each coming off strong performances as both found the end zone often. Brown ran for 71 yards and a touchdown, and threw for 135 yards and two more scores. Stevenson led the way on the ground with 154 yards and three touchdowns. The Green Wave defense forced three turnovers and held the Eagles to -4 rushing yards. Caruthersville last beat Malden in the Class 2 District 1 championship in 2013.
