Dear Editor,
The FBI plays a critical role in safeguarding our democracy, upholding the rule of law and maintaining national security. It is, therefore, imperative that its leadership reflects integrity, impartiality and a steadfast commitment to the principles of justice. Unfortunately, Kash Patel, whose name has been floated as a potential nominee to lead the FBI, lacks the qualifications and poses significant risks to the agency’s mission and credibility.
Patel’s track record raises serious concerns. As a former Trump administration official, he was at the center of efforts to discredit the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. He has repeatedly and publicly said he feels all Trump’s enemies should be investigated, and prosecuted, such as those serving on the Jan. 6 committee. This partisan agenda directly undermined public trust in law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Moreover, Patel’s role in advancing baseless conspiracy theories about election integrity demonstrates a disregard for facts and an alarming willingness to erode public confidence in our democratic institutions.
Leadership at the FBI demands nonpartisanship and a commitment to justice above all else. Patel’s history of political loyalty over professional responsibility suggests he would fail to meet this standard. His appointment would risk politicizing the agency further, threatening the impartiality and integrity that are essential to its function.
Our nation cannot afford to place someone in charge of the FBI whose actions and rhetoric have consistently undermined the values the agency stands to protect. We must demand leadership that prioritizes the Constitution, not political allegiances.
Sincerely,
Kami Ortego Anspach
