VAN BUREN, Mo. -- Vernell "Nell" (Reeves) Godsy,80, daughter of the late James and Martha (Barton) Reeves was born Sept. 5, 1936 in Oneonta, Ala., and departed this life Friday, May 26, 2017 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.

Nell had resided in Van Buren since 1999 and was formerly of Madison, Ala. She came from a large family and was one of 13 children; she was the third from the youngest. She was a credit/Catalog Manager for J.C. Penney for 30 years. She enjoyed visiting with people, volunteer work, quilting; she was a master quilter, sewing, cooking and gardening. She was always a gracious host, and loved spending time with family and friends. Nell was a devoted Christian of the Baptist faith, and had taught Sunday school. She was a loving and generous person who loved to laugh and had a great sense of humor.

On Sept. 3, 1951, she was united in marriage to Ted Swann and to this union, four children were born. On June 27, 1997, she was united in marriage to David Godsy in Huntsville, Ala., who survives of the home.

Survivors include two sons: Gerry and Debbie Swann of Cairo, Ga., and Joel Swann of Hazel Green, Ala.; two daughters: Sharon and Tom Griffis of Tanner, Ala., and Jill Swann of Platte City, Mo.; three step-children: Jay and Mary Godsy of Fremont, Mo., Mary Alice and Jessie Rager of Athens, Ala., and Ira and Marshelle Godsy of Athens, Ala.; three sisters, Pearly Brown of Jacksonville, Ala., Ilene Cochran of Oneonta, Ala, and Faye Dumas of Oneonta, Ala.; 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends who mourn her passing.

In addition to her parents, Nell was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters; one step-child, Naida Godsy, and one grandchild, Jonathan Swann.

Visitation for the public will begin at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at the Church of God of Prophecy in Van Buren, with the funeral service following at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Poca Hollow Cemetery in Van Buren, MO. Rev. Don Foerster will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Carter County Nutrition Center.
