Shirley Fisher Maurer, a beautiful and loving soul, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 10, 2018. Shirley Fisher Maurer, a beautiful and loving soul, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 10, 2018.

Shirley, a resident of Hobe Sound, Fla. began volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club of Hobe Sound in 2001. While there for over 15 years, she created the Harry Potter Reading Club and was a tutor inspiring many local youth to have a great love of reading. Shirley was named Outstanding Senior Volunteer of the year at Martin County's first Appreciation Awards coordinated by the Children's Service Council, Martin County.

Shirley, 92, was a child in British Columbia, Canada during the great depression. She left Canada for the U.S. at the age of 20 to serve as secretary to the head of the YWCA in New York City. She then served in the U.S. Navy for four years, and married USMC Master Sergeant Earl Maurer in Leucadia, California. She had a long career working at the Veterans Administration in Poplar Bluff and several other locations before retiring to Florida 27 years ago.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Earl Maurer, of Poplar Bluff, parents, Agnes Hamill Fisher, Steele Fisher, brothers Bill and Frank casualties of WWII, and sister Bernice Fisher Shannon and her husband John of British Columbia, Canada.

Shirley is survived by her loving daughter Anna Maurer Allen and son-in-law Jerry Allen with whom she lived joyfully for the last 27 years in Hobe Sound, Florida; son Vincent Maurer, formerly of Poplar Bluff, now residing in Florida; grandson Christopher Allen of Pittsburgh, PaA., grandson Nathan Maurer, his wife Candis, and great-grandchildren Landen, Molly Marie, and Chase of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Clarissa Maurer Hall and husband Steve, great-grandchildren Brody and Maverick of New Haven, Mo., Christy Maurer and great grandchildren Taytyn and Mason, also of New Haven.

She is also survived by nieces Frankie Windsor and Kelly Stent, nephews John Shannon, Patrick Steele Shannon and Michael Shannon, all of British Columbia, Canada. She is also survived by her dearest friend Lori Chick who was like a daughter to her; Lori's children Brandon Chrysler, Kelly Moore, and Jordan Chrysler who were like her grandchildren and dear friend Mark Trotter, all of the Carolinas. Shirley's loving presence and beautiful smile will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for Shirley at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 123 N. Eighth St. in Poplar Bluff on Aug. 11th at 4 p.m. and on Aug. 19th at 9 a.m.
