Mary Doris Whittle, 98, of Poplar Bluff, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at Cedargate Healthcare.
Mary was born May 3, 1923, to William George and Vernice (Evans) Burris in Charleston, Missouri. She and Harlon Hardin Whittle were married November 15, 1941, in Corning, Arkansas. He preceded her in death December 24, 2008.
Mary was a member of New Hope General Baptist Church. She enjoyed traveling and reading. Mary worked for Ben Franklin until the company closed and then worked as a clerk for J.C. Penney for 21 years.
Mary is survived by two children, Dowell (Carolyn) Whittle of Poplar Bluff and Lonnie Burris of Leander, Texas; four grandchildren, Gregory Whittle of Poplar Bluff, Scott Burris of Jackson, Tennessee, Kent Burris of Texas, Regan Burris of Leander, Texas; a brother, Charles Burris of St. Louis; five sisters, Eunice Joiner of St. Louis, Joyce Sue Ray of St. Louis, Emma Lou Mattingly of St. Louis, Kathleen Battles of Poplar Bluff and Jeanie Wheeler of Poplar Bluff; and many great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary is preceded in death by a son, Glen Whittle; a grandson, Kirk Burris; a brother, Jimmy Burris and two sisters, Ann Burris and Helen Galnos.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 3 from 11 a.m. until time of service at Willow Ridge Funeral and Cremation Service. Funeral service will be at noon at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.
