Kenneth Ray Fears, 69 of Poplar Bluff, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019 at the Hospice Care Center in Little Rock, Ark., surrounded by his family.
Ray was born on January 18, 1950 in Poplar Bluff, the son of Ruby (Fears) Anderson.
He was a 1967 graduate of Poplar Bluff High School.
Ray was an auto mechanic, working many years at Swafford’s service station. He became known as “Cool Cat Ray” because of his ability to fix any air conditioning problems. Ray later opened R&T Texaco on 5th and Main in Poplar Bluff. Ray loved working on various types of vehicles and was always willing to help others fix their cars, trucks or tractors. He was the go-to guy for automobile problems.
Ray was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He made many friends over the years and loved spending time with them and his family.
Ray will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving siblings, Janet Brown of Poplar Bluff and Doris (Rex) Pourchot of El Paso, Ark. and Danny Spradling of Granite City, Ill.; grandchildren, Nicholas and Sarah Ursery. Other survivors include, an aunt, Roberta Arndt; cousin, Diane Street; many cousins, nieces and nephews; special friends, Terry ‘Coach’ Smith, Josh and all his friends at Huddle House.
In addition to his mother, Ray was preceded in death by his grandparents, Susie and Edward Fears; stepdaughter, Tonya Ursery and longtime friend, Gayle Garrett.
Visitation will be at noon Friday, Sept. 20 in the chapel at Moore Funeral Service, 1100 Iron Bridge Road, Poplar Bluff.
A service celebrating Ray’s life will follow at 1 p.m. A private inurnment will be held at Sparkman Cemetery.
