John R. “Jack” Gholson, Sr., 79, of Poplar Bluff, died Tuesday, March 24, 2020.

He was born Feb. 7, 1941, in Albuquerque, N. M. to the late Walter C. Gholson, Sr. and Irene (Johnson) Gholson. He was of the Catholic faith.

John or “Jack” as many of his friends knew him, was a long time resident of Poplar Bluff and was very active in the community. A Navy veteran, he was a member of the American Legion for 50 years, He was one of the first volunteers for the Butler County Fire Department, he volunteered in many community projects for 30 years, judged the BBQ contests and enjoyed cooking for the Legion as well. Outdoors and animals were another favorite of his.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon (Gulledge) Gholson; two sons, Dean Gholson and wife, Sheree, and John Gholson and wife, Nicole, all of Poplar Bluff; two daughters, Carla Thompson and husband, Kellis of Poplar Bluff and Darla Vann and husband, Tyler of Milford, N.H.; and two brothers, David Gholson of Poplar Bluff and Ken Gholson of Liberty Hill, Texas. He was also blessed with seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William A. Gholson and Walter C. Gholson, Jr. and one sister, Shirley McIver.

There will be a private family service at a later date. A sign-in book will be available for family and friends outside the chapel door of Fitch-Hillis Funeral Home on Friday, March 27, 2020 from 10 a.m. 3 p.m.
