SUCCESS, Ark. — Mr. James Larry Crowell, 75, of Poplar Bluff, passed away Sunday, Aug. 30, 2020, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, after a brief illness. Mr. Crowell was born in Success, Arkansas, on June 13, 1945, the son of James and Christine (Wise) Crowell. He attended Success Elementary School and Corning High School.

He was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in the Dominican Republic for a short time. After receiving an Honorable Discharge in September of 1971, he worked briefly as a penitentiary guard in Anderson, Indiana.

He later returned to Arkansas and worked at Johansen Shoe Factory in Corning for several years. After his employment with Johansen’s, he moved to Poplar Bluff and began working in a group home, helping physically and mentally disabled clients. His most recent employment, which began 31 years ago, had been with ADAPT, where again he provided care and support for the adult handicapped.

Mr. Crowell’s passions included his love of the Saint Louis Cardinals, the many friendships he had made around town and his family.

His survivors include three daughters, Joella and her husband, Jim Wolpers, of Poplar Bluff, Jamie Whitehead of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Jennifer and husband, Kevin Wooldridge, of Jonesboro, Arkansas; his sister, Priscilla Williams of Success; grandchildren Allie and Darby Hall, Joe Weston, Trevor, Todd and Trey Wooldridge, all of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Lucy Wolpers of Poplar Bluff; niece, Rhonda Moore of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and nephew, Steve Williams of Greenway, Arkansas.

Graveside memorial service will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m. at Hitt Cemetery in Success with the Reverend Wayne Baldwin officiating.
