Irene Smith, age 89, left her earthly residence on Sunday evening with her loving family at her side. She is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ experiencing the joys of heaven, having become a believer and being river baptized in 1950.
The former Wilma Irene Robbins was born the sole child of Hiram and Mamie (Hodapp) Robbins and lived her entire life in Poplar Bluff. Irene was skilled at drawing and painting and was a prolific seamstress. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church, where she taught children's Sunday School for many years. Irene enjoyed spending time with her family, flowers, traveling and camping and fishing
Irene married Jack G. Smith in Poplar Bluff on Oct. 5, 1947. They celebrated their final anniversary of 62 years in 2009 before Jack passed away on Aug. 24, 2010.
Irene is survived by her five children Theresa (Larry) Cole of Poplar Bluff, Linda (Gary) Underwood of Manitowoc, Wis., Perry (Vicky) Smith of Cypress, Texas, William "Bill" (Myra) Smith of Poplar Bluff, Gary (Carol) Smith of Pevely Mo.; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Irene was also preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Robert Paul Smith.
Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel with the funeral service following at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. Byron Beck will officiate. Interment will be at the City Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.
