Harriet Lela Hayes-McMillon, 73, of De Soto, Missouri, passed away in the early afternoon of Aug. 19, 2021, at Mercy South after battling a long-suffering illness.
She was born May 8, 1948, in Broseley, Missouri. She was the daughter of the late Howard Hayes Sr. and Josephine Trout Hayes. She worked for 50 years as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She graduated from Broseley High School in 1966 and attended the First Church of Nazarene in Poplar Bluff, Missouri where she met her husband, Floyd McMillon.
Harriet attended Arkansas State University majoring in nursing and later completed her BSN degree from Parkton Institute. She loved helping others. She was a talented gift wrapper. She loved wrapping gifts and sponsoring Christmas and birthday parties in her home and church. She was a devoted wife and stepmother. She enjoyed reading and teaching Bible classes.
Harriet was a sincere Christian. She had been a member of the First Baptist Church of Herculaneum-Pevely, Parkton Assembly of God in Barnhart, and Parkton Bible Fellowship Church, in De Soto.
Harriet is survived by her stepdaughter, Shawna McMillon of Minnesota, her husband, Floyd McMillon of De Soto, and many other family and friends. Harriet was preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings including her twin brother Howard Jr. She worked as a nurse at many places including St. Clement Healthcare center, Correction Medical Services at the Missouri State Correctional Institution in Bonne Terre, GP Pharmacy, and was the school nurse at the Parkton Institute. Anyone who knew Harriet was touched by her kindness, transparency, and mild temperament. She was loved by many and will always be remembered.
Memorial celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, at Parkton Assembly of God Church, 1670 Old State Road M, Barnhart, Missouri, 63012. The Rev. Monty L. Roak, officiating.
