DONIPHAN, Mo. -- Grady Ray Slayton, Sr., 68, of Doniphan, Mo., died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, at his residence.
Mr. Slayton, son of Ralph Lester and Gladys Irene (Smith) Slayton, was born Oct. 20, 1949, in Ripley County, Mo. He had been an attendant at an automotive business. Grady was a familiar fixture at the Buddy Butler Tire Shop in downtown Doniphan many years ago changing tires for Mr. Buddy and at its closing, he went to work for D & D Tire Service functioning in the same capacity. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and took special pride in helping to raise his 13 grandchildren. Grady was of the Baptist faith.
On Sept. 20, 1970, he was married to Mary Alice Kelly at West Doniphan, Mo., and she survives. Grady and Mary enjoyed 48 years of marriage.
Also surviving are four children: Grady Ray Slayton, Jr. and Elizabeth Nicole (and Jason) Holmes, both of Doniphan, Howard Gene (and Brandy) Slayton of Pocahontas, Ark., and Alex Ray Slayton of St. Louis; one sister, Roberta Slayton of Doniphan; four brothers, Bob Slayton of Grandin, Charles Slayton of Illinois, Tom Slayton of Oklahoma and Billy Slayton of St. Louis; 13 grandchildren, Hunter Johnson, Timber Johnson, Brook Trinity Martinez, Dakota Tucker of Thayer, Katie Marie Slayton, Gary Howard Slayton, Clifford Tuck, Jasamine Holmes, Chloe Holmes, Corey Watts, Terry Watts, Kim Watts and Donald Watts; and one great-grandchild, Matthew Ray Tucker.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, George Slayton, Joe Slayton and Everette Slayton.
Visitation will begin at noon Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, at the Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan and the funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. A private burial will take place at a later date.
