George Leon Powers of Enterprise, Alabama passed away Sept. 14, 2020 in Enterprise, Alabama where he made his home the last few years.
Leon was born in Michigan, but grew up in Poplar Bluff, the son of the late Archie and Wanda Morgan. He graduated Poplar Bluff High School and joined the Army shortly thereafter. Leon retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 after 29 years in the Army and National Guard. He was a decorated Vietnam helicopter pilot who was respected and admired by his peers.
After retiring from the military he worked in the private sector flying helicopters and later returned to Ft. Rucker where he flew for a private contractor as a test pilot. He loved the ocean and flying.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Julia (Bell) Powers of Enterprise, Alabama; sons, Matt Powers (Sonya) of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida and Jason Powers of Enterprise, Alabama; sister, Donna Pinkerton (Ronald) of Poplar Bluff; sisters-in-law, Rita McVey (Brandon) of Poplar Bluff and Deborah Henschel of St. Louis; grandchildren, Sophie, Carlie, Sheppard and Samuel; four nieces, two nephews and several cousins.
Funeral arrangements in Enterprise are being handled by Sorrells Funeral Home and a burial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, at Bloomfield Veterans Cemetery.
