Edna Jean Young, 71, of Poplar Bluff, transitioned Friday, April 19, 2024, in her home.
Edna was born Aug. 22, 1952, in Catron, Missouri, to Roosevelt West and Thelma Thomas.
Edna enjoyed volunteering at church, helping others, especially inner-city children, and watching TV and movies. She especially enjoyed spiritual programs. Her favorite past-time was ordering Chinese food and watching Bruce Lee karate movies. She enjoyed nature, reading, and sports, especially football.
Edna worked for the Poplar Bluff and St. Louis, Missouri school systems for over 40 years in administration. She worked for the American Red Cross in St. Louis for 10 years. In addition, Edna graduated from the St. Louis Police Citizens Academy.
Edna is survived by her daughter, Dawn Hawes of Poplar Bluff: two brothers, Howard Brown and Kenneth (Mary) Thomas, all of Poplar Bluff; four sisters, Kathy Thomas, Jacquelyn Jackson, and Carolyn (Aimee) Thomas, all of Poplar Bluff, and Jo Margaret (John) Hale of Leesburg, Virginia; two grandchildren, Byron Heath Thomas Jr. and Brittley Thomas; three great-grandchildren, Jaylen Thomas, Zion Thomas, and Brielle Thomas.
Edna was proceeded in death by her husband Robert Young, her son Byron Heath Thomas, Sr., her parents Roosevelt West and Thelma Thomas Walker, her sister Shirley Harley and her brother Ronnie Thomas, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A private memorial service was held April 27, 2024.
