POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. — Cloyce Sowell, 83, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Mr. Sowell, the son of the late Walter G. and Florence Breedon Sowell, was born March 30, 1935 in Clarksdale, Miss. He was a member of Highland Church of Christ, and was a retired farmer of many years. During the 1950s, Mr. Sowell pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies. He was an avid gardener, a sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, but the times he cherished most were being with his family.
On May 22, 1955, he married the love of his life Melba Baughn Sowell in Tuckerman, Ark. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters: Diane Coleman (Ronald) of Saffell, Ark. and Debra Sandlin (Lorenzo) of Poplar Bluff; five grandchildren: Hillary Anderson (Jon), Heather Dickson (Jeremy), Kyle Sandlin, Aaron Sandlin (April) Brian Sandlin (Jessica); nine great-grandchildren: Eli, Reid, Hadleigh, Logan, Bella, Aiden, Miles, Matthew and Brooklyn; and a brother Ray Sowell (Doris) of Poplar Bluff.
Mr. Sowell was also preceded in death by a grandson Matthew Sandlin, three sisters Dorothy Whitemore, Faye Sneed and Ethel Wheeler, and two brothers Gene Sowell and Jerry Don Sowell.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Church of Christ. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with Mr. Vernon Curry officiating. Interment will be at Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.
