Christine ‘Chris’ Johnson, 84, of Poplar Bluff was welcomed into her eternal home Friday, Oct. 4, 2019 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Chris, the daughter of the late Odell Wells and Alma Talley (Wells) Payne, was born Nov. 17, 1934, in Pollard, Ark. Her stepfather who raised her, Foster Payne and a little brother Tommy Payne also preceded Chris in death.
She was a longtime member of Westwood Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Chris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who lived her life as a testament to her Lord and Savior. She enjoyed being with her family, going to church as long as health permitted, reading her Bible and listening to God’s Word preached on radio and television. Chris was steadfast in her faith, telling others of Jesus Christ’s saving grace.
She was married to Buren M. Johnson on Oct. 7, 1953. He preceded her in death on Oct. 16. 1999. We take comfort in knowing that they, having accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, are reunited in Heaven as children of God.
Survivors include three children, Kevin (Susan) Johnson of Bertrand, Mo., Kyle Johnson of Poplar Bluff and Kimberly (George) Brooks of Arnold, Mo.; two grandchildren, Rebekah Weber and Abigail Elliott of Poplar Bluff; two great-grandchildren, Trent Elliott and Waylon Weber; four brothers, Charles “Rick” (Debbie) Wells and Floyd Payne of Poplar Bluff, Richard (Pudge) Payne of Mt. Vernon, Mo. and Jimmie (Rosemary) Payne of West End, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11 at Westwood Baptist Church with the funeral following at 11:30 p.m. Dr. Steve Proctor will officiate. Burial will take be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery
