West Side Church, located at 2807 Channon Street in Poplar Bluff, is having a busy summer. The church ended its vacation Bible school on Wednesday, July 5, with the bang of fireworks, courtesy of the mens’ group — and West Side has a half dozen more events planned for July.
“We are continually growing our church,” said church head of hospitality Amy Blackburn. West Side wants its presence in the local community to grow as well, she added.
“It’s all about Jesus and doing good for our neighbors,” Blackburn said.
West Side begins a month of outreach on Sunday with church members Ray and Belinda Winters presenting Financial Peace University. This free-to-the-public class will show attendees how to use the strategies of radio show host Dave Ramsey in their own financial planning. It will take place at the church from 6-8 p.m.
On Monday, July 11 the church’s fellowship hall will open at 11:30 a.m. to women of all ages to attend the monthly meeting of the Karen Winters Circle. Luncheon will be provided.
“Music is a great way to get into church service,” Blackburn said. For that reason West Side welcomes anyone interested in playing music to show up for the Worship Team auditions at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 14.
“We appreciate all music talents and styles,” she said. The church has used piano, drums, keyboard, guitars and even had musicians play the harmonica, cello and the violin in their music worship services.
There are two youth events scheduled for the middle of the month. The Youth Float Trip will take place on Saturday, July 16, and a special Youth Night service is set for Wednesday, July 20 from 6-8:30 p.m. The details of the youth events have yet to be finalized, but Blackburn says they will be listed on the church’s Facebook page very soon.
On Sunday, July 31, West Side will end the month with something new. The Kids’ Side ministry will be having a Swimsuit Sunday. There will be water activities set up on the church lawn.
“I’ve never heard of this being done,” said Blackburn. She wants to encourage all kids to come in their swimsuits and play while the worship service goes on inside the church.
“July is busy but we are rolling along,” Blackburn went on. “Things are continuing in August.”
West Side is even now planning a Back to School Bash to start the new school year.
Anyone interested in West Side Church’s events is urged to contact the church via its Facebook page.
