Forecasts of heavy rain and the cancer patients' health are reasons the sixth annual UCAN Sarah Jarboe White Walk will be Saturday, June 10, instead of this weekend.

"Our decision to postpone the walk until June 10 revolves around our concern for the safety and health for our cancer patients for whom a walk in the rain is a physical challenge," said UCAN Executive Director Melody Melloy.

The event will be held at the Danny Bell Cancer Treatment Center, 2620 N. Westwood Blvd,, Melloy said. Activities will begin at 9:30 a.m. with Poplar Bluff Mayor Ed DeGaris presenting a proclamation and Rev. Greg Gilberto offering the invocation. The route will be the same as it has been in the past.

Melloy asks everyone who planned to participate this week to mark their calendars and make a difference in the lives of local cancer patients by walking in June.

This year, UCAN will be giving a traveling trophy to the team bringing in the most money, Melloy said.

"The money raised by UCAN assists patients living in Butler, Wayne, Ripley and Stoddard counties with fuel cards, utilities, groceries, medical expenses, housing, nutritional supplements, wigs, turbans, transport services and many other necessitates while they are going through chemotherapy and radiation and unable to continue to work," she said.

UCAN provides critical assistance free of charge to area cancer patients who are undergoing cancer treatments, such as infusion chemotherapy or radiation. Assistance is available to qualifying patients who are able to show financial need and meet UCAN guidelines.
