Two people were airlifted after a weekend high-speed chase that topped 100 miles an hour and ended with a rollover crash that threw one person from the car.

Clay County, Arkansas, Sheriff Ronnie Cole reports Jacob Woods, 22, and Amanda Smith, 31, face felony weapons and drug charges, in addition to other charges.

The incident started at 9:40 a.m. Sunday, on Highway 328 north of Corning, Cole said in a press release.

A deputy observed a red Ford Mustang traveling on the wrong side of the road, according to reports. The oncoming vehicle allegedly almost struck the deputy’s patrol car.

He attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but said the driver of the Mustang fled.

“The deputy initiated the pursuit on County Road 139. The speed of the vehicle was 100 mph,” Cole said. “They crossed Highway 67, still on County Road 139 southbound. They traveled about 1 mile, then the subject lost control of his vehicle. (The vehicle) crossed into a road embankment (and) came back on the road, rolling the vehicle.”

Smith was thrown from the vehicle, according to law enforcement. Woods allegedly jumped out of the vehicle and attempted to flee.

He was apprehended by deputies.

Smith was airlifted to St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Woods was airlifted to Regional Medical Center in Memphis.

Deputies say doctors recovered a large bag of a white powdery substance believed to be narcotics from Smith.

They also report recovering an AR-15, additional items believed to be narcotics and cash from the scene.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Corning Police Department and Arkansas State Police.

Smith is being charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to delivery, the felony of simultaneous drugs and firearms, and possession of a firearm by a certain person.

Woods faces the same charges, as well as careless driving, no driver’s license, no insurance, fleeing and resisting arrest.
