The Twin Rivers R-X school district has started looking into replacing the gym floor at the Qulin campus.

Dr. Ben Johnson, superintendent, said they need the project as the floor is buckling at this point and is becoming dangerous.

The district reached out to the Missouri United School Insurance Council (MUSIC), which it’s a member of, to help cover the cost.

The floor is between 75 and 80 years old, Johnson said, and there’s water damage underneath it.

MUSIC representatives, he said, want to make sure the district solves the water problem before replacing the floor.

“Which makes complete sense,” Johnson said. “Why invest all this money if you’re just going to have the same problem over and over?”

The first step, he said, is to figure out how to address the water issue there, which some board members are helping with.

After that is addressed, Johnson will get back with MUSIC about what to do for the actual flooring.

He said options include a wooden floor or looking into a rubberized floor.

“I’m speculating, but I’m pretty sure it (a rubber floor) would be less (to insure) and more insurable because it will last a lot longer, and they’re more durable,” he said. “That’s something we can think about.”

Johnson said there’s no timeline for when the project needs to be completed and wants to wait until the time is right to make sure it gets done in the best way.

He mentioned looking into something to do with the old planks, which get removed and some members of the community may be interested in.

Johnson said the district also is working on beautification projects at all three campuses, including new glass graphics at the entrances and the mats at the exterior doors.
