The church began hosting Old Fashion Day three years ago to demonstrate to the public how life worked before modern conveniences, and to show the public how to live with very little or even be self-sufficient if times became tough. Inflation was reportedly an inspiration for Old Fashion Day.

They daylong event included industrial demonstrations of a steam engine, wood cutting, crosscut sawing and grinding meal. The 60-odd visitors also learned how to cook over an open fire using a dutch oven and kettle, can fruits, vegetables and meats, and identify edible mushrooms while foraging. Other demonstrations included candle making, homeschooling, the uses of herbs and plants, sewing clothes and linens with a peddle machine, and fiber arts like crocheting and embroidery.

At lunch, the group was served the meals prepared in the dutch ovens and kettles for an overall experience. To end the day, the church offered hot chocolate and apple cider as a reward for a day’s hard work.

Community Church of Christ is located in Lowndes, Missouri, and is family owned and built. They plan are to continue Old Fashion Days in the future.
