I love to hike. Next to fishing, it is my favorite outdoor activity. In fact, if I can hike and fish on the same trip, well let's just say, it is pretty close to heaven.

This past week I had the privilege of hiking in the Lake of the Ozarks State Park.

As I prepared to go, I made sure I had plenty of water and also my collapsible fishing rod and kit.

The trail itself is just under two miles, but the view is spectacular. The trail cuts through the forest until you come to the clearing at the top of the mountain. (Okay, for you from Colorado, the very tall hill). Then it's back into the forest to the look out over the lake. You come off of that to a trail that takes you by the shore in a small cay, and it is there you can fish. It's better than Disney World (I know, because I've been there).

The point is, God gives us so many opportunities to experience his goodness.

As I reminisce about the trail, Psalm 66:1 comes to mind, "Shout for joy to God, all the Earth; sing the glory of his name ...".As I stood in the forest, and stood on that clearing, I could see creation itself singing God's praises.

The birds singing, the squirrels jumping in the leaves, the evidence of cat, coyote and deer all show God at work in His creation. I cannot understand how any person can doubt the existence of God when they are exposed to nature.

You know, following Christ is not complicated. It is no more complex than taking a walk in the woods.

But as in any journey, we have to prepare.

For the hike, we must exercise for the physical challenges. For the journey, with Christ we exercise through study and worship.

For the hike, we take a walking stick to steady us on our way and defend us if need be. For the journey with Christ, we have the Bible and prayer as our walking staff.

For the trail, we let someone know where we will be and how long we expect to be there. For the journey with Christ, we walk with Christ and are never alone.

As we head into summer full force, I commend you to God and his creation.

As part of your hiking and fishing gear, take a Bible. Read God's Word in the cathedrals built by His hand. Don't be afraid to talk to God while you walk and remember to listen for His still small voice. Let the nature of God's creation renew you and energize you.

After you get back, take the new-found energy to church with you and let others know about God's awesome world. Above all, bask in the goodness that is God's grace.
