A woman struck a downtown utility pole after falling asleep at the wheel Friday morning, but no one was injured.
At approximately 9:20 a.m., a motorist driving northbound on Fifth Street hit a pole directly adjacent to the parking lot of Vine St. Apartments.
“There were no injuries reported at the scene and the driver fell asleep at the wheel,” Sgt. Shaun Prenger of the Poplar Bluff Police Department said while at the scene of the accident.
The occurrence happened next door to the post office and had many neighboring business owners opening their doors to review the scene.
One such business owner, Mark Mercer of Hanuman Express, said that the electricity to his business was out directly after the accident.
“Things happened very quickly,” he said. “These workers got here really quick to repair the line and it looks like a heck of a mess. So far, I have seen a lot of work that they have done out here and they are very impressive.”
Mercer was also complimentary towards the post office employees, whom he said immediately responded to the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident before first responders arrived.
“He (post office employee) immediately went to pull her out of the vehicle,” Mercer explained.
