A painting that has toured the state will be added to the permanent collection of the Margaret Harwell Art Museum just as it opens "Three Decades of Art."

The museum won a bid for the Butler County painting included in a series by artist Billy O'Donnell, which featured one location from each of Missouri's 114 counties, and the city of St. Louis.

The artwork captures the museum, said director Steve Whitworth.

O'Donnell will attend an opening reception to be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the museum.

The state paintings were featured in a book, "Painting Missouri," with copy by Karen Glines. Glines will also attend the reception.

The show, which runs through January 2018, celebrates the art museum's permanent collection.

Another O'Donnell painting, "Soulard Sanctuary, St. Louis," is also part of the permanent collection and will be on display, along with work by local and regional artists.

Wine and refreshments will be served, according to organizers. A lighted tour of the sculpture garden will also be held.

"The Margaret Harwell Art Museum hosted the first one-man show for Paul Jackson. We did an early showcase for Dean Mitchell. And, we've inspired countless artists with our resources," said Whitworth.

The Friends gift shop will be open Saturday, with Christmas gift items available, according to the museum.

MHAM acquired the new painting with a bid of $3,325.
