In a festive celebration that combined the sounds of the First United Methodist Chancel Choir with the sweet and spicy aroma of gingerbread, the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library played host to a cheerful holiday event on Saturday. This inaugural Gingerbread House Walk brought together the community in a celebration of music, creativity and true holiday spirit.
The event showcased the talents of the First United Methodist Chancel Choir, with their ensemble of Christmas Carols including “Silent Night,” “Up on the Housetop,” “Away in a Manger” and many more. The choir, led by Pam Becker, treated community members to traditional and contemporary music accompanied by tone chimes. Becker encouraged attendees of all ages to get in on the caroling.
Becker stated the choir had performed at a separate event last weekend and were all tired but could not turn down the opportunity to be involved in such a wonderful event for the community. Becker said she has “been the director of the choir for 28 years, and they never cease to amaze me in their abilities and willingness to participate. There truly is a sense of community and family here.”
As community members were serenaded by the cheerful sounds of the choir, they were also treated to a feast for the eyes and nose with a beautiful display of gingerbread houses created by community members, from Minecraft displays to traditional gingerbread houses.
“The idea for this event was to create a sense of togetherness for families and the community…” and “hopes that it will continue to grow in the future,” said Connie Roberson, Childrens Services Librarian.
Attendees left the library with ears ringing with the echoes of music, and cups of warm cocoa and apple cider. The library and FUMC hope to make the event a community tradition.
