A Poplar Bluff man was arrested Monday on a warrant for domestic assault and also might soon be facing drug possession charges after methamphetamine, ecstasy and marijuana allegedly were found in his vehicle.

In the morning hours of May 31, Poplar Bluff police officers responded to a disturbance complaint in the 1700 block of Illinois Avenue, according to a press release. Officers arrived at the residence and contacted Joffery Lee Johnson, 36, of the 2600 block of Hickman Road, who then was taken into custody for an outstanding domestic assault warrant without incident.

During the course of the investigation, officers discovered 198.2 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 13.8 grams of suspected MDMA (Ecstasy) and 6.4 grams of suspect marijuana in Johnson’s vehicle. If confirmed as drugs, their estimated street value is approximately $16,000.

Johnson was booked at the Butler County jail. Formal charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, three counts of distribution of a controlled substance in a protected location (public housing) and possession of marijuana are expected in the coming days.

This case will also be forwarded to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Drug Enforcement Administration for assistance in prosecution, Poplar Bluff officers report.

Johnson is a previously convicted felon and “is well known to Poplar Bluff and federal narcotics officers in the narcotics trade,” the Poplar Bluff Police Department said in a press release.

Johnson pleaded guilty in November 2005 to possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. He also was charged with non-support in April of this year and was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, armed criminal action and discharging or shooting a firearm at or from a motor vehicle in March.
