A dispute over a bicycle may have led to a fight Saturday morning that left a Poplar Bluff man dead and another in jail.
The Poplar Bluff Police Department said in a statement that officers were dispatched at 9:19 a.m. Saturday to the intersection of Woodrow and Henry streets in reference to two subjects fighting.
"Upon arrival, officers discovered a white male subject lying in a ditch, unresponsive," Lt. Josh Stewart said in a statement.
According to police, EMS personnel attempted to revive the man, later identified as a 59-year-old Poplar Bluff resident, before he was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"In speaking with witnesses, it was learned the suspect, identified as Skylar Carter of Poplar Bluff, had fled the area on foot," Stewart said.
Carter later returned to the scene where officers placed him under arrest and transported the 25-year-old to the Poplar Bluff Police Department.
"Carter is cooperating with the investigation," Stewart said.
The victim's name was not being released until notification of next of kin, said Stewart. An autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon in Farmington.
"During the course of the investigation, it was learned the altercation occurred due to a dispute over a bicycle," Stewart said.
Carter was later transported to the Butler County jail where he being held on the charge of second degree murder with a $500,000 cash or surety bond.
