Downtown Poplar Bluff is about to get spooky — Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, Poplar Bluff Municipal Library, Downtown Poplar Bluff, Inc. and Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce are hosting the first annual Downtown Strawman Competition. Businesses and families must reserve their scarecrow’s spot by noon Wednesday.
“We’re interested to see what happens, just to see the creativity,” said Amanda Hughes of PBPR.
Organizers said in a press release that strawmen can be traditional scarecrows or whimsical, funny and artistic creations. Participants are asked to keep their entries family-friendly and avoid anything too scary or gory.
“We were brainstorming different events and came up with it as something annual, to beautify and help make our downtown feel more homey,” said Hughes.
The remaining spots can be reserved for for $20. Strawmen will be placed on a tree or light post on the two blocks encompassing Main, Cedar, Broadway, and Vine streets. Each entrant will choose a location at the time of registration.
The contest will be judged on Sept. 25. Voters will choose the People’s Choice scarecrow by liking its photo on the library’s Facebook page. Judges will choose the Mayor’s Award, Most Creative, Scariest, Funniest and Best in Show entries. Winners will be contacted after judging is complete.
