Residents returned home 613 Kinzer St. about 8 p.m. Thursday to find their home filled with smoke and their dog and three cats dead.

Poplar Bluff firefighters from the three stations responded to the alarm and upon arrival, found light smoke showing, said Battalion Chief Jeffrey L. Hale in his report.

Hale said once the firefighters advanced to the kitchen, they found the fire had burned itself out. The crews, totaling nine firefighters, checked for any remaining hot spots with the thermal imaging camera and ventilated the smoke out of the house.

According to the report, residents Brittany and Nick Kinder stated the stove was accidentally left on and unattended. Jack Rushing owns the property.

Hale contacted animal control to take care of the animals.

The fire was out on arrival. Firefighters spent approximately 40 minutes at the scene.
