A Poplar Bluff man will spend the next 19 years in federal prison on multiple convictions stemming from a carjacking incident in December 2019.

United States District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr. sentenced Carlos Wallace, 33, on Wednesday to serve 228 months on the offenses of carjacking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

According to court documents, on Dec. 11, 2019, Wallace opened the rear door of a vehicle that was stopped at a Poplar Bluff intersection and climbed into the backseat.

He then ordered the male victim to drive down several city streets and onto a gravel road where Wallace told the victim to exit the vehicle. When the victim refused to comply with Wallace’s demands, Wallace pointed a firearm at the man and shot him in the leg.

When the victim was out of the vehicle Wallace drove off.

Wallace was captured Dec. 23, 2019, after an attempted traffic stop by a Poplar Bluff Police Department officer. A high speed chase ensued and ended when Wallace’s vehicle became stuck in an alleyway. Wallace then surrendered to police and was taken into custody.

The case was investigated by the Poplar Bluff Police Department, Butler County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
