DEXTER, Mo. -- Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's crash investigation unit returned Monday to the scene of a fatal crash involving a Stoddard County deputy.
At 5:43 p.m. Saturday, Stoddard County Deputy Derrick A. Durall, 25, was operating a 2013 Ford Explorer northbound on Highway 25 with its emergency lights and sirens activated, according to a patrol report.
At the intersection of Stoddard Street in Dexter, Durall's patrol vehicle allegedly struck a westbound motorized bicycle, which was crossing the highway.
The bicyclist, David J. Griggs, 22, of Dexter, was pronounced dead at Southeast Health of Stoddard County in Dexter at 6:05 p.m. by Stoddard County Coroner Kenny Pope.
An autopsy, Pope said, was performed on Griggs Sunday afternoon by Dr. Russell Deidiker at a Farmington, Mo., hospital.
"It looks like the preliminary cause (of death) is going to be a skull fracture," Pope said.
Griggs, according to the patrol report, was not wearing a safety helmet at the time of the crash.
Samples, Pope said, were taken for toxicology analysis, and those results typically "take at least two months" to be returned.
As authorities await those results, members of the Major Crash Investigation Unit are continuing their investigation, said patrol Sgt. Clark Parrot.
"They were going back (Monday) to plot, diagram (the scene) with whatever special tools they use," Parrot said. "They will be reconstructing it."
Per policy, Parrot said, the reconstructionists have 30 days to complete their report.
Sgt. Kevin Malugen, Parrott said, was there Saturday and marked the scene with paint.
Monday, Parrott said, Malugen was looking at the area of impact, final resting positions, drag factors and "then (he'll) go back and do all the math on" that information as the scene is reconstructed.
When asked about his department's policies concerning incidents such as the accident, Sheriff Carl Hefner said, he couldn't "make any statements or comments at this time; it's still under investigation."
