After certifying the results of the April 2 election, the Neelyville School Board swore in Marco Gavino and Matthew Marshall as members during its Thursday meeting. The board voted to keep Jim Hover as president.

For vice president, members approved Gene Russom to take the position. The positions of treasurer and secretary will continue to be filled by school district employee Kim Toth.

The board discussed the May 17 surplus auction. Member Paul Petty asked if interested individuals could make a donation instead of having to bid on items. Superintendent Heather Black said she would look into the possibility as long as the money went into specific funds.

For the ongoing security discussion on whether to hire a school resource officer or other security personnel, the board voted to table the issue again. Black explained there are several education bills currently in the State Legislature.

“They can really affect our budget,” she said.

The school district received several more bus bids. Two used International gas-powered buses priced at $119,717 and $99,965 caught the eye of board members. For a new bus, Petty explained the price would be nearly $150,000 with at least a 220-day lead time.

Hover relayed some concerns the school bus mechanic had about the specific engine in the two used models, however. The board tabled the matter until more information could be gathered.

The next board meeting will be held on May 16 with the open session at 7 p.m.
