The Neelyville R-IV Board of Education accepted the lone LP gas bid Thursday evening to be delivered to Hillview Elementary during the 2018-19 school year.

Reed Oil Company of Doniphan submitted a bid for propane gas for $1.259 per gallon.

Superintendent Brad Hagood reported the propane gas price was slightly higher than last year's cost of $1.03, but also added fuel costs had increased.

The board also approved moving forward with the tinting of the top row of windows at the high school and at Hillview by Supertints of Poplar Bluff at the cost of $6,100.

After reviewing the windows, Hagood said Supertints reported the windows at Hillview did have tint on them at this time, but recommended the bottom row be redone. In their opinion, the top row of window tint was still in good shape.

The company will take the current tint off the windows, clean it and reapply.

"I think it will look better and help cool (the building)," Board Vice President Gene Russom said.

Hagood added the tint will also provide a safety aspect to the school.

The district will once again offer student accidental insurance from K&K Insurance. The insurance is an option at an affordable price for students who would like to buy a plan.

Hagood added MSHSAA requires students who participate in extracurricular activities to carry insurance, so this was an option for students who needed a plan.

K&K Insurance has offered plans for students at the Neelyville School District for the last several years, and Hagood reported one student took advantage of the offer last school year. Hagood and bus mechanic Tony Eakins discussed the results of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's annual bus inspection.

The district's fleet of 15 buses received a score of 73.3 percent, nearly a 10 percent increase from last year.

"It was all items that needed to be addressed, but does not effect the safety of driving down the road," Eakins said.

Items which resulted in point deductions included high beam indicator brightness, parking break not holding to standard, a bus starting while the emergency door was locked, an emergency exit window buzzer and tire rod hitting the bottom of an axle.

Both Eakins and Hagood assured the buses were mechanically safe and items such as lights and buzzers were the issues.

"If there is any way that we think a bus is having any kind of mechanical issues, we pull it and don't use it," Hagood added.

The board also held a public hearing prior to the start of the monthly board meeting regarding starting the school year 10 days or more prior to the first Monday in September.

No one attended the public meeting and it was closed with the first day for the Neelyville School District being Aug. 13.

A hearing for the district's tax rate hearing will be held at 6:45 p.m., Aug. 16, prior to next month's regular board meeting in the Central Office board room.

During executive session the board voted to hire Cindy Siebert for junior high softball and Jo Ann Engleman as a bus driver. The next Neelyville R-IV board meeting will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 16 at the Central Office board room.
