NEELYVILLE, Mo. -- Butler County authorities are searching for a Neelyville man who is accused of shooting another man in the arm on Sunday.

At about 11 p.m., Deputy Derek House was sent to a residence in the 100 block of Haynes Street at Neelyville regarding an assault involving a firearm. The alleged suspect had fled in a white Toyota passenger car.

House, according to his report, contacted Larry Brown in the front yard of the residence. The 39-year-old reported he had been shot in his right arm, just below the elbow.

Emergency-medical-services personnel subsequently arrived, and Brown was taken to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center for treatment.

House said he spoke to Brown's son, Curtis, who reported his father and his roommate had been drinking most of the day, and his father "had became highly intoxicated."

Curtis Brown further reported his father and his girlfriend were in their bedroom arguing, while he and his roommate were in the living room watching TV.

House said Curtis Brown heard what he described as a physical altercation between his father and his girlfriend.

"(He) stated that he and (his roommate) went into the bedroom to see what was going on," House said.

The two men, according to House, were able to speak with the elder Brown and get him into the hallway, where his father "became upset, so (he and his roommate) had to 'bear hug' (him) to keep him from going back into the room" with the girlfriend.

House was told the men subsequently got the elder Brown out of the house in an attempt to calm him down.

The elder Brown, according to his son, allegedly "began to attack" his roommate, tackling him to the porch floor.

House said Curtis Brown was able to separate the two men, after which time, his father told the other man to leave the residence.

"C. Brown stated that (his roommate) walked to his car and got inside," House said. "(He) stated that (his roommate) is insulin dependant and requested that he be allowed to get his insulin and his dog" before he left.

Curtis Brown, House said, reported his father went inside to get the man's belongings, and when he returned, he "was enraged and was walking toward (the other man) as if he was going to fight him."

At that point, Curtis Brown told House his roommate "ran to the corner of the residence where (he) 'leveled' a black snub-nose revolver on L. Brown, telling him not to come any closer."

Larry Brown reportedly continued walking forward, and the other man allegedly fired one shot from a distance of about 4 to 5 feet away.

"C. Brown stated that (the other man) then ran to his vehicle and left the area at high rate of speed," House said.

The man's car reportedly was found abandoned on the side of Highway 67 South, north of Neelyville.

Lt. Charles Phelps said Tuesday morning that deputies still are attempting to "locate the suspect."
