NEELYVILLE — The Neelyville R-IV Board of Education approved the 2019-20 school calendar and set 6 p.m. Saturday, May 4 as the Class of 2019 graduation date during their meeting Monday evening.

According to incoming Superintendent Debra Parish (see additional story), faculty and staff were presented with three calendar options.

After receiving input, more options were given and the calendar recommended by Parish received the most votes.

Aug. 14 is scheduled as the first day of school for the district and averages out the quarters a little more, she said.

The district’s annual Veteran’s Day Program will be held Friday, Nov. 15 with dismissal at 1 p.m. in addition to the following Monday and Tuesday dismissed for deer season.

Christmas break is scheduled for Dec. 20 through Jan. 6, 2020 and a potential last day of school set as May 6, 2020.

__Leaking Roof__

According to Superintendent Brad Hagood, following the recent large amount of rainfall, the roof in the high school principal’s office has been leaking heavily.

With a roof replacement projected to cost $100,000 to $150,000 Hagood and several other board members expressed not wanting to put that amount of money into the building.

Another option discussed was constructing a building to house the high school principal, high school counselor, technology coordinator and a classroom.

Hagood estimated a building to cost about $150 per square foot and the size would depend on what the district could afford.

The board decided to continue discussions at a later date after thinking on the matter and gathering quotes for work.

The roof has been patched and filled in places by district maintenance employees since the rain and is holding at this time.

The next Neelyville Board of Education meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21 at the Central Office board room.
