A local group has begun fundraising efforts to make sure the graves of veterans receive special attention this Christmas.
The Poplar Bluff Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is organizing the effort.
This is the second year they will participate in the national Wreaths Across America program.
The goal is to place a wreath on the graves of nearly 800 veterans laid to rest in Butler County, shared Brenda Worley, chapter treasurer.
“We want to ensure that the individuals who served to protect the freedoms of our country will not be forgotten and to bring the community together in this patriotic commemoration,” Worley said.
There are 4,000 locations nationwide which participate in Wreaths Across America. There was not one located in Butler County prior to the Poplar Bluff chapter’s efforts.
“Save the date of Dec. 14, as we invite the community to attend the dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. and help place the wreaths of remembrance on our veterans’ graves,” said Jane Worley, chapter chairman for this sponsorship.
The wreaths will be placed on graves at Memorial Gardens.
Individual wreaths cost $17 each and the Poplar Bluff DAR chapter is working to raise enough to see each veteran there recognized.
“We are forever grateful for the thousands of supporters who dedicate their time, energy and resources to fulfilling our mission all year long,” said Karen Worcester, executive director of Wreaths Across America. “These individuals and their communities know the value of remembering the fallen, honoring those who currently serve and teaching the next generation about the sacrifices made for our freedom every day, and because of their continued support, Wreaths Across America continues to grow and touch new people each year.”
The Poplar Bluff DAR chapter said a gift of any amount is appreciated with checks made payable to Poplar Bluff Chapter NSDAR and can be mailed to: PBDAR, 256 County Rd 334, Poplar Bluff, MO, 63901. Since Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) organization, contributions will be tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
