The R.W. Huntington Municipal Pool in Poplar Bluff may open to the public by July 1.
“We are cautiously planning for a July first opening,” said Lanny Corcimiglia, director of parks and recreation.
The pool, which employs 15-20 lifeguards for the summer season, has had a slightly delayed opening this year, as it usually opens in early June. The delay was caused by issues with a pool liner.
“The installers were behind on other jobs,” said Corcimiglia, stating he was unsure as to what had slowed them down but suggested possible supply issues and COVID as contributing factors.
The liner that is being replaced was 18 years old and was damaged and degraded, according to Corcimiglia. Most pool liners, according to RenoSys pool repairman Tom Deluca, have about a 10 to 15-year life span.
The new pool liner will be installed as soon as the old one is completely removed It is approximately 11,000 square feet and is not only a large undertaking, it is also a major expense.
“The cost of the liner has gone up by $30,000 since last year’s quote,” said Corcimiglia. “The new liner will cost $172,000.”
Work started Tuesday to remove the old liner. Repairs are expected to take about a month, weather permitting.
Corcimiglia said the pool and building have already seen many improvements over the past few years. It is now equipped with new plumbing and hot water, a new shade space, new tables and chairs, an updated entrance and paint. This year, they are intending to add another shade space for an extra covered area. This will also allow the pool to host two parties at one time.
