Wednesday, Dec. 13, 5:30 - 7 p.m., the First United Methodist Church, 500 N. Main St., invites the citizens of Poplar Bluff to enjoy their annual Community Christmas Dinner. For many Poplar Bluffians, the community Christmas dinner is a tradition. This year, as in years past, members of the First United Methodist Church and volunteers will serve a roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings. The dinner, which is free, is this church's gift to Poplar Bluff.
Preparation for this annual event begins early in the week.
During the past few years, it is estimated from 900 - 1,000 people have enjoyed this holiday meal. Volunteers and members of the church roast more then 30 turkeys, mash nearly 300 pounds of potatoes, prepare pans of stuffing, yeast rolls, and green beans. In addition to the food for the main course, cakes and pies are baked for dessert lovers.
Once again, everyone is entertained as they wait to be served and while they are dining. Gary Garner, retired band director, orchestrates the entertainment. Among those groups performing are the "Ringing Strings."
Circle Wednesday, Dec. 13., on your calendar. If you are a regular attendee, you won't want to miss this annual event. If you haven't made the Community Christmas dinner at the First United Methodist Church make a point to do so this year. You will be blessed. And, don't forget to thank the members and volunteers of the First United Methodist Church for their generosity.
