Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dexter will host a special Christmas performance by composer and musician Tony Melendez on Dec. 12.
Melendez, originally from Rivas, Nicaragua was born with no arms and a clubbed foot due to the drug, Thalidomide. Thalidomide was prescribed to his mother by her doctor during pregnancy to ease morning sickness.
He was brought to the Los Angeles area and fitted with artificial arms, which he wore until he was 10. He disposed of them because he didn't feel comfortable and he could use his feet so much more.
His proficiency with his feet extended to more areas than just day-to-day care. He started playing the push-button organ, then at the age of 16 taught himself to play the guitar.
In high school he became deeply involved in the Catholic church. His parents took him when he was young and he drifted away as he got older. With his brother's urging he returned and it changed his life.
Melendez used his talents as a guitarist and composer for masses and church-related events. Demand for him increased so much he was directing and singing in music groups at up to five masses on any given Sunday.
He was then selected to audition for a chance to perform for Pope John Paul II. He was chosen and after the performance the Pope greeted him with a kiss.
He has since performed in all 50 states, 40 foreign countries and made numerous television appearances. He sang the national anthem at Game 5 of the 1989 World Series.
He has received numerous awards and honors. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the performance will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free and no reservations will be taken.
The church is located at 115 E. Market St. in Dexter. CDs and books will be available for purchase. A love offering will be taken to support Melendez's ministry. For more information contact Father William W. Hennecke Jr. at the Sacred Heart Parish office at 573-624-7333.
