A mayor’s prayer breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. May 22 at Mt. Calvary Powerhouse Church to recognize a historic moment in Poplar Bluff’s history, as well as previous community leaders.

Ward 5 representative Robert Smith was chosen in April by council members to serve as mayor. He is the city’s first African American mayor.

“I think it’s an exciting time. It’s a historic time, an auspicious occasion,” said Mt. Calvary Bishop Ron Webb. “There’s just a lot of people excited about our new mayor.”

Smith has served on the council for about 14 years.

“He’s been a great team member there, very supportive and he’s a very good person. I think we have a great mayor,” said Webb. “We’re just really looking forward to working with him. We just pray for a lot of success.”

The event will include recognition of several past city mayors as well. This event is part of what the church and the organization Bridge the Gap work for in the community, unity and diversity, Webb said. Bridge the Gap is a coordinated effort by members of the faith-based community and law enforcement.

“I’m sure there will be representatives from the community, religious and business community,” Webb said, of the event. “We’re anticipating a great crowd, a lot of fun and fellowship.”

United Gospel Rescue Mission will provide the meal. In addition to speakers, there will be a special singing.

The event is expected to last about an hour.
