The annual Author Fair at the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library brings local writers and their readers together. This year, librarians say the library is highlighting new and recently published authors.
“Every year we try to up our game a little bit. That’s why this year we are focusing on new and recently published books,” said Alora Bauer, adult services librarian. This year’s lineup also includes speakers and prize drawings.
The eighth annual Author Fair is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 4, and the deadline for priority sign ups is Feb. 3. If accepted, priority applicants will be notified by Feb. 10. The remaining spaces will be filled by applications accepted after Feb. 3, said Bauer. There is no entry fee and 25 spaces are available.
Library Director Shannon Midyett said the Author Fair is popular with local writers because it puts them in touch with each other and their readers.
“One of the things the authors talk about when they have attended these fairs in the past is how excited they are to get to network with other authors,” she said.
“It’s great to connect with other authors, but it’s really nice to meet your readers and to be able to talk about your books and writing process,” added Bauer.
This year’s keynote speaker is associate professor Katherine Gilbert of Drury University, presenting “21st Century Missouri Gothic: The Novels and Films of Gillian Flynn.” Gilbert will trace the legacy of the Gothic novel in Flynn’s work and how she uses the backdrop of rural Missouri and Kansas to create a subgenre all her own. Flynn is known for her books “Sharp Objects,” “Dark Places” and “Gone Girl,” which received popular film and television adaptations.
Local publisher Gaëlle Freer is also set to present on independent publishing and marketing.
The Author Fair is not only a hotspot for writers, but has a huge draw on readers too.
“Maybe there’s a local author out there who has your next great read and you just didn’t know it,” said Bauer.
