WAYNE COUNTY, Mo. –Interested in growing mushroom or timber management?

University of Missouri Extension is offering a Timber Management and Mushrooms class from 3-5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at shelter 1 at Sam A Baker State Park, Patterson, Missouri.

“This is a good time to come out and learn more about woodland stewardship and mushroom growth as the season approaches,” said Kelley Brent, CES, MU Extension Wayne County.

This program will provide information on forest stand improvement, a common forest management practice that improves forest health. There will also be information on propagating mushrooms using the log byproducts from a forest stand improvement. Sarah Havens, field specialist in natural resources, will teach the program.

“Much of Missouri’s forests are overstocked which increases competition between trees and slower growth,” said Havens.

Forest stand improvement can improve forest health, increase timber value in the long term and help control invasive species. Each participant will inoculate a log with shiitake mushrooms to take with them.

There is a $30 fee for the class. Register online at https://extension.missouri.edu/events/missouri-woodland-steward- management-and-mushrooms-1616693586 or contact the MU Extension office in Wayne County at 573-224-5600 ext 8.
