“Hilary Taylor was foundational in proving to our son that he was smart, worthy and could be successful,” stated Emily Summers, parent of one of the many students Taylor’s dedication and influence have impacted during her almost 20 years in teaching.

Taylor has been selected as the Poplar Bluff Junior High building and middle school grade level teacher of the year for 2022. This is the first in a series of stories about outstanding educators in our region.

Taylor has been a part of the Poplar Bluff School District since 2005, working with both elementary and junior high students. “During my tenure at the junior high, I have created a hands-on, project-based curriculum for drama, game design and robotics,” Taylor said, “To date, I have received over $28,000 worth of grants to enhance my teaching and the classroom experience for my students.”

Taylor began teaching in the lower elementary, then moved into the field of English at the junior high level, but according to co-worker and teacher Nikki Davis, “she was the one that needed to step in and lead the gifted students.”

Taylor returned to school for her master’s degree to teach gifted education and is now a leader in the curriculum for the SINGS program, which is designed to help teach gifted and talented students.

Taylor has worn many hats during her years as a teacher, but she is now not only responsible for the SINGS program and Robotics but also the Credit Recovery Program.

Along with her dedication and drive, Taylor also brings with her many years of experience in grant writing, which aids the district in providing additional resources and extended learning opportunities for its students. These grants have allowed the school to purchase gadgets and tools that have been very useful in teaching in various programs such as robotics.

Taylor is said to set exceptionally high standards and expectations for her students but also provides them with clear objectives and supportive instruction.

Parent Toni Stoner said, “Hilary’s ‘gift’ of teaching is evident within just minutes of entering her classroom.”

Reading through the many letters of recommendation received in reference to Taylor’s achievements, the commonality seems to be the passion, dedication and kindness she has consistently shown her students and peers alike.

It was stated in one recommendation letter to the Teacher of the Year committee, “She would literally give someone the shirt off her back if they needed it.”

Taylor is said to go above and beyond, which is evident in her teaching as well as her actions in everyday life.

Her compassionate heart led her to foster a student and her newborn baby.

Taylor is strict but caring, according to those who have had the opportunity to work with or be instructed by her. The upbeat, no-nonsense approach to teaching that Taylor is said to have has earned her much respect amongst her co-workers and students alike.

“Mrs. Taylor is so much more than a teacher, she’s a supporter, a friend and a role model,” stated former student Aaryn Johnson.

She went on to add, “Mrs. Taylor is an astounding teacher, but she is also a compassionate, caring woman who would do almost anything for her students.”
