A Highway W bridge will be closed for four months this summer as crews replace the structure.

The bridge is over the Black River, located between County Road 525 and Ravenwood Lane.

Work is slated to begin June 1 and be completed by Sept. 30, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

This is part of a $25.5 million project to upgrade 17 bridges across Southeast Missouri.

It will impact nine counties, according to contractors Robertson Contracting, which is working with Horner & Shifrin engineering and Penzel Construction on the project.

“The design-build team is committed to constructing quality bridges and minimizing traffic disruption for area residents, with a focus on keeping both the public and our workers complete,” according to Robertson.

The existing bridge was constructed in 1964 and over the years the bridge has been impacted by traffic and roadway salt. It is currently rated in poor condition, but is considered safe, according to information released by the contractors.

The new construction will include drilled shaft foundations and precast concrete beams.

It is designed for a service life of 75 years, the contractors’ report.

Load restrictions will be removed once the work is complete.

The Hilliard access point on the Black River will be closed during the work.

A marked detour will be in place on Route O and Highway 67.

Work timelines may be impacted by inclement weather or flooding.

Other completed projects that were part of the Bootheel Bridge Bundle include Route K over the Black River in Reynolds County, Route DD over the St. Francis River and Route DD over the St. Francis River Slough.

Work is underway on bridges in Pemiscot and St. Francois counties also.
