God's love is infinite--beyond measure; who can comprehend it? A look at a few scriptures will confirm it. "For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16. "Now, before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour was come that he should depart out of this world, having loved His own which were in the world, He loved them to the end." John 13:1. He knew before the night was over Judas would betray him, that Peter would deny even knowing him, and the others would desert him, yet his love remained constant.
"God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8. This clearly shows Jesus did not come to earth and shed his blood on Calvary's cross because we merited it. He did so because of his infinite love for us (mankind).
Jeremiah 31:3 says: "Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee." If God loved the people of Israel with that depth of love, is there any wonder that his patience with us delayed his judgement in the twenty first century, despite our indifference, materialism and pleasure seeking.
It is, perhaps, in this attribute we can most clearly comprehend the nature and perfection of God. Without infinite love God would be a fearful being. For to know he is all-powerful, all-knowing, infinitely holy and just, and is our final judge, would cause us to stand in mortal fear of him-lest our sinfulness be known by his omniscience, despised by his holiness, condemned by his justice, and we be destroyed by his omnipotence. But God has revealed his love for us as being unfathomable, unrelenting and freely bestowed upon us when we accept His Son as our Savior.
Let us exclaim with the Apostle Paul, "Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift."
